Athens Integral Cooperative: Building Alternative Economies in Greece

Athens Integral Cooperative: Building Alternative Economies in Greece

Right now it’s obvious to everyone that
this political system cannot work anymore. It’s not — I cannot call it “bad” or “good”;
it’s *not working.* I’m Theodore, I’m living here in Athens. We are building a substantial, alternative,
and autonomous economy. Integral [Athens Integral Cooperative], it is the
gathering of individuals, collectives, and social forces that already make a social economy,
like the time banks, like cooperative shops, like individuals that [are implementing]
community tasks or local tasks. Our aim is to integrate the activity to build
a substantial economy. Most of us have to produce something
*and* exchange it. We’re not [dividing] ourselves into producers
and consumers. We have to exchange things,
and we have to build cooperatives that can actually produce and cover our needs. First, Integral organization is
based in direct democracy. We do work only with assemblies, we make
collective decisions based on consensus. Secondly, we do have a trusted transaction
system which is a digital platform. Every exchange is going though this platform. There is no such thing as
debt or accumulation in our network. In our societies, the first goal is to educate
people how to be self-managed and autonomous. I believe that people have abilities. They forgot their abilities through time,
in this consumerist culture. Everyone measures the value,
even the value of their lives, in Euros! We have that culture,
and we have to transform it, and I think that the network is
doing a very good job at it. Surely it is a concept revolution towards
this culture of autonomous exchange
and autonomous productivity. And that’s the best, and the main
result we have to achieve.
