Today here in Genova we had an antifascist demonstration which was organized by the Antifascist Assembly but a large number of genoese citizens also called for it due to the opening of two fascist headquarters in this city Genova is a city that has never had an organized presence of neo-fascist groups and within its territory it always had a very strong and rooted antifascist political tradition. Recently, neo-fascist groups have tried to re-settle in this city and this has been something something completely new. Currently, CasaPound is the strongest neo-fascist group in Italy – numerically speaking and considering their widespread rootedness in the national fabric. It’s a group that defines itself as the ‘third millenium fascists’. With this, apparently bizarre name, they mean that they are revising the fascist ideology in order to adapt it to the historical changes that are taking place in this period. They run for the elections, which will be held shortly. Therefore they are a group that will be voted in these elections. They are allowed to participate even if fascism is considered illegal in the Italian constitution, precisely because they claim that they are not related to that fascism rather belonging to a different type of fascism. In this way, especially because they were cleared by the Italian institutions, they have been allowed to open headquarters, carry out political activities and run for elections. Consequently they are running for the Italian [parliamentary] elections. At this moment, their ideology is based on their claim to be sovereign, they would like to recover the Italian national sovereignty over the European Union. They declare to be against immigration and the huge ‘migration waves’ – therefore they are strongly racist and they openly declare their racism. They want the state to take care only of the white Italian autochthonous citizens, through social intervention that only support part of the population. However, at the same time, they play politics in the same way fascist organizations have always done, through violence against immigrants, against comrades, against anti-racist political activists, etc. Few months ago they opened an office in Genova, though they didn’t do it publicly. They organized a closed door conference because they know that the majority of the genoese citizens oppose neo-fascism and groups like Casa Pound. So, at a popular level, they have not been very successful, but still, they managed to open this office. One month and a half after the opening a dangerous event happened: a group of comrades who were flyposting for this demonstration were attacked by the fascists which were inside the office and one comrade was stabbed. This event has worsen the political climate and gave further support to this demonstration. It increased the rage among the comrades and the antifascists in Genova and in Italy. In fact, for this demonstration there was much support from other Italian cities. I believe that the number of people who participated at the demonstration was significant. There has been a great attention and a great solidarity and I think that we are all very very happy about this. I would like to add that a very crucial point of this demonstration was the fact that the demonstration was launched to battle the neo-fascists, but at the same time it declared to be strongly against the fascist policies of the government. The Italian government is ruled by the Democratic Party, which is not a party that declares itself fascist, but in the last four years it has implemented policies that we have defined as fascist. Consequently a whole series of forces, which call themselves leftist did not participate, because we have been very clear that we are also fighting against the government and its policies. Therefore today is a very important victory for us. We declared that militant antifascism is also an anticapitalistic and revolutionary antifascism that strongly fights the capitalist governments in Europe that are currently implementing neoliberal policies which are also colonizing policies and therefore fascist.
