after 25 years of power Stalin's appeal to the people still came on a nationalistic basis not for love of communism but for love of Mother Russia in August 1941 President Roosevelt and Prime Minister Churchill issued a joint statement of peace aims the Atlantic Charter its principles freedom peace and prosperity for all were quickly accepted by the Communists the German offensive into Russia seemed invincible but the tide turned at Moscow the Russian people held a capital city along Pierce Russian with her halted operations of both armies but the spring offensive of the Germans advanced along a 300-mile front in the last week of August 1942 the Germans pushed to the gates of Stalingrad the siege of Stalingrad turned into one of the bloodiest battles of the war when the Russians eventually launched their major copper offensive 90,000 Germans were forced to surrender tens of thousands of German War prisoners were put into slave labor camps and never seen again in 1943 in 1943 Stalin dissolved the Comintern Western leaders interpreted this step as a further indication that the Communists were willing to change their policy of inevitable world conquest the Russians had reinstated religion in their homeland they had agreed to the Atlantic Charter they had fought courageously against Hitler coming here on a tide of Hope on the tide of assurance that victory will be won they will not be indefinitely withheld and of hope but when it is one we shall all of us endeavor to make the world a better place for the great masses of human beings to live in a conference at Tehran was held to decide war strategy and eventual peace policies three men Roosevelt Churchill and Stalin talked of a lasting peace Stalin signed the fact of friendship and cooperation the United States alone let the Communists 11 billion dollars no attempt was ever made to repay the loan the second front Stalin had been demanding for over a year became a reality On June 6 1944 the longest day finally dawn you but the Allied advance across Europe was a very slow and costly one each mile brought the world closer to the war's end in preparation for this day the Yalta Conference was held in February 1945 signed documents promised freedom and self-determination for the countries the Communists had already occupied the West's faith in these communist promises allowed Stalin to gain many concessions on April 25th 1945 United States and Russian armies came into friendly contact at the Elbe River near Leipzig more days later the last-ditch desperate street fighting for Berlin was raging on May 8 the war in Europe was over a lone plane carrying a single bomb was to end the war in the Pacific the first atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima on August 6 1945 on September 2nd on the USS Missouri the formal surrender of the Japanese to the United Nations were scientists peace at last peace was here now a better world must arise from the ashes the citizen armies of the West began immediately to disband home for the English the French the Americans the Russians delayed the mobilization during the Second World War Russia added 260 thousand square miles to her territory 23 million people fell under her direct role the Communists had swallowed up half of Europe the chain of events occurring in the satellite nations were universally the same small communist bloc's in these governments controlled power far beyond their actual representative backing in each of the satellite nations Hungary East Germany Czechoslovakia Romania Bulgaria Poland and Austria a puppet government answered to Moscow's vollis's not the people's witches the country's one by one irrevocably lost the freedom they had been promised the reason for Russia's reluctance to demobilize her huge ground force became apparent Sir Winston Churchill declared in March 1946 an Iron Curtain has descended across the continent as Communist doctrine dictates Stalin had taken two giant steps forward into Eastern Europe tactics had not changed communist guerrillas try to take Greece and Turkey in March of 1947 the policy called that Truman Doctrine was instituted to supply military aid to Greece and Turkey a free world was at last forced into an open fight against the spread of communism France was the scene of great communist demonstrations in the same year equally fierce strikes and riots occurred in Germany and Italy under the guidance of the Communists in 1947 America financed a recovery program to curb communism's growth known as the Marshall Plan recovery of Europe has been far slower than had been expected these integrating forces are becoming evident the patient is seeking while the doctors deliberate this was an attempt to help start the countries of the world back on the road to recovery after six years of war Russia savagely denounced this aid as a capitalistic maneuver to subjugate Western Europe but their walkouts on peace conferences continued the West trying to find the road to world peace founded the United Nations on October 24th 1945 the United Nations withstood its first real test in the Iran situation when Stalin refused to withdraw his troops stationed there during the Second World War in the face of overwhelming world opinion Stalin withdrew his troops one step back the Communist leader next reinstated the organization Lenin had originally set up a world revolution this time it was called to come in for not the Comintern in 1948 Yugoslavia because of nonconformity with Moscow policy was expelled from the common form while both East and West would Tito Yugoslavia's dictator troubles flared up in Berlin Berlin and Germany had been divided into four sectors and has agreed occupied by Russia France Great Britain and the United States three elections and freedom of speech had been promised for all sectors the Communists did not honor this agreement the Soviet Union tried to force the ally is completely out of Berlin by closing all access routes from West Germany the West answered this blockade by summoning the Berliners to a mass meeting here it was announced that the West would Institute the first airlift to save the city from communism [Applause] at its peak one plane landed in Berlin every 45 seconds for 11 long months the airlift supplied the West Berliners with all necessities of life during this life-saving operation 73 aircrew members of Western nations died in Fresh's the western sector of the city prospered in the Russian sector reconstruction stood still the most damning indictment of communism became the steady stream of refugees fleeing from the communist zone 3,600,000 by 1961 Russian strategy had backfired they were forced to call off the abortive lucky one step back June 25th 1950 the Soviet trained and equipped army of the Korean communists attacked across the 38th parallel two steps forward Korea was not a war between North Korea and South Korea the Russians experimented to see how far the West would extend themselves to stop communistic expansion young men of many countries fought without knowing why they were defending a strange land here they sacrificed their youth and their lives South Korean Army and United Nations soldiers were almost pushed out of Korea by the initial communist onslaught but the first couple offensive was formidable this advance was stopped only when Mao Zedong the Chinese Communist dictator sent in a huge well-trained army to assist the North Koreans his interpretation of Marx may differ from the Russians but the end they seek is the same a communist world the cruel war in Korea was finally fought to a stalemate July 27th 1953 the Armistice the sign months before the war's end in Moscow Stalin had died Stalin had ruled Russia with an iron hand his power more absolute than the czars now after 30 years of absolute power he was laid in the tomb beside the other god head of communism Lenin the two deified figures were to lie in state for all eternity what was left of the original Marxist theory that call for a classless society Stalin had instituted a class of bureaucrats whose power and wealth was far greater than its counterpart in any other country Russia was a totalitarian state exploiting its own people as well as other countries immediate steps were taken to form a collective leadership group this was shared by Molotov Perea and Malenko Nikita Khrushchev soon broke into this exclusive circle and was given the senior post of Secretariat they seemed a likely job for the least important member of the collective this exterior front of solidarity the leadership group presented to the world hid a bitter internal struggle for power barrier head of the secret police was the first to be crushed the power struggle finalized between the camps of malankov and Khrushchev Khrushchev's rise to power was unheralded but steady it always been one to make good political use of his peasant origin born on April 17th 1894 his father was a local blacksmith Khrushchev fought in the Red Guard and was wounded in 1918 he had a knack for choosing the winning side he proved this by following Stalin not Trotsky by 1937 he received his reward by becoming one of Stalin's chief lieutenants the great purchase he conducted after the Germans were driven out of the Ukraine in 1944 gave him the title of hangman of the Ukraine in 1955 first Jef became a known figure outside Russia his trip to placate Tito afforded Khrushchev additional stature at home as well as abroad the West's hope that Yugoslavia might become a crack in communism's wall into this crack the West poured millions of dollars planes and food Tito continued to be a communist khrushchev steadily strengthen his position by joining forces with other strong men in the party a new era in communist history was opened when Khrushchev delivered a seven-hour speech in which he denounced the godlike Stalin as a murderer and egomaniac and most damning of all to communists an unfaithful Leninists Stalinist atrocities were admitted Khrushchev confessed Russia's worker's paradise and liquidated complete populations this de-stalinization speech by Khrushchev in 1956 and unexpected repercussions in the satellite nations the workers of Poznan and Poland arose hoping this admission of Stalinist barbarous pacts in the past meant Russia would now restore certain basic human rights Poznan offered a spark of hope for the captured satellite nations October 25th 1956 a massive but peaceful demonstration was staged in Budapest led by former communist officials the crowd demanded the democratic governments when the people refused to disband the Hungarian steel police opened fire the Hungarian Revolution had started Russian troops were ordered to crush the freedom fighters but their own rights deserted in five days the remaining Soviet troops were beaten the people had won Khrushchev said Mikoyan and Zeus loved to confer with the Revolutionary Government Mikoyan reported a Moscow that the Russians were defeated Khrushchev promised that Soviet troops would be withdrawn one step back the Hungarians went wild with celebrations they were free that was singing dancing guns were left on the streets the Hungarian delegation the leaders of the revolution went to the village of cacao south of Budapest to discuss the date of withdrawal of the Communists the delegates were immediately seized by communist troops simultaneously the reinforced Soviet army started a massive attack they have Oh a Hungarian people thought tanks with rocks and clubs on Sunday November 4th 1956 the radio station in Budapest pleaded people of the civilized world in the name of liberty and solidarity we are asking you to help our ship is sinking the light vanishes the shadows grow darker from hour to hour listen to our cry God be with you and with us the station went off the air the flickering light of freedom had gone out Hungary was once again imprisoned behind the iron curtain two steps forward this near victory by Hungary caused more shifts in the Kremlin malankov Molotov and others tried to curb Khrushchev's rising power but gross chaff appealed to the Central Committee here he found support which enabled him to take complete control of the Communist Party [Applause] Khrushchev moved into a position that only two men before him had enjoyed Lenin and Stalin October 4th 1957 Russia launched the first Sputnik into space the tiny signal transmitted by the first satellite seemed to wake up a slumbering world to the progress of communism the space race was on [Applause] the new technological success of ordered Khrushchev the chance to propose a thaw between communism and the West chyna two seemingly followed the new Thor Mouse a tongue maid innovations in his country referring to ideological differences Mao Zedong said benevolently but a hundred flowers bloom the opponents of communism in China revealed themselves voices were raised in hope and silenced by vast reprisal power say down necks concentrated on his big leap forward program a billion hands were to carry rocks and stones China would lift herself up on the backs of her people Mao Zedong would feed the starving masses by means of people's communes live the collective way read the slogans work as if you are fighting a battle but the people's communes failed leaving the masses to starve Mao Zedong remained for the time being in the shadow of a new Russia a Russia with missiles and atomic bombs these new weapons enabled Khrushchev to be a dominant figure in his struggle for world power he prophesied repeatedly that communism was on the verge of taking over the world these bravado remarks seemed more ominous as trouble arose at the doorstep of the United States in sun-drenched Cuba the central figure of the Cuban Revolution and leading to love the Soviets Fidel Castro Castro the son of a wealthy sugar grow at an early age was attracted to revolutionary activities he served a prison term for attacking a Batista army barrack and was exiled to Mexico here he trained a small band of fellow exiles in mountain warfare tactics returning to Cuba he was skillfully guided and advised by dr. ernesto Guevara a communist agent supplied with Czech and Russian rifles and equipment Castro directed his guerrillas and a campaign of civil terrorism that resulted in complete victory over Batista [Applause] after victory Castro's firing squads started their methodical elimination of Paul who had resisted him before this communist purge was quelled over 600 Cubans fell riddled with bullets communism no longer a vague form across an endless sea was 90 miles from the white beaches of Florida two steps forward July 24th 1959 Richard Nixon Vice President of the United States flew to Moscow to serve as American representative at the American exhibit here Chris Chapman Dixon held the famous kitchen debate everywhere that you said has been taken down and I will promise you that every word we'll be reported in the United States and they will see you say it on television yeah we do we got some new ideas right the Myakka choose to be over TV [Applause] and that same token everything that I say will be recorded and translated and will be never shown to greater Russia following Nixon's visit Khrushchev was extended an invitation to the United States he hoped the captured people's behind the Iron Curtain would view this as America's complete acceptance of communistic rule over them Khrushchev stripped gave the American people a chance to study Russia's newest dictator his speeches in Hollywood that you may perhaps laugh now but when we overtake you wave our hands hands and say goodbye our train is going ahead catch up if you can first Jeff later labeled this dance an example of capitalistic decadence the West hoped to gain an advantage from the Khrushchev trip by a return trip of President Eisenhower to Russia however a United States observation plane flamed out and landed 1,200 miles inside Russian territory its pilot Frances G Powers was captured and later tried as a spy Khrushchev used this convenient incident to summarily cancel the summit conference scheduled in Paris Khrushchev next squeezed more mileage out of the u2 by using it as a pretext for cancelling President Eisenhower's return visit to Russia New York City dear Khrushchev first met comrade Castro at this UN session Khrushchev pounded out his protest first with his fists and later with his shoe Eisenhower said we are prepared to submit to an international inspection provided only it is effective and true no reciprocal right the kingdom of gladly allow for our inspection and control that is accepted by the Soviet Union all right Leggett translation to viewers this show of contempt opened many minds to the true nature of communism communist tactics insults friends intimidations today a man called Khrushchev uses these tactics tomorrow it will be another communist while first just staged his act before the UN in another part of the world the Belgian government agreed to withdraw from its colony the Congo upon receiving official independence Congolese troops new plead and kill their Belgian and native officers [Applause] [Applause] a torrent of looting and terror spread throughout the land the inflammatory situation was ready-made for Soviet technicians Russian trucks guns and propaganda poured into the Congo Africa reeled under the strain of premature independence [Applause] [Applause] on September 5th President Joseph Casa booboo had Lumumba arrested and attempted to restore order in the land the flare-up in Africa subsided but wherever there are hungry people or mistreated workers Communists will always be assigned to preach Marxist Leninist doctrine of hate which functions best in the midst of poverty anarchy and war April 12th 1961 roast chefs rocket engineers successfully launched astronaut Gagarin in orbit around the world armed with this new propaganda victory Khrushchev believed it was time for communism to take two steps forward again the chosen target fell in road after road was closed between East and West Berlin Khrushchev bowed to sign a separate peace treaty with East Germany but the West moved additional troops into Berlin the stream of refugees flowing into the western sector drew to a mighty torrent of 5,000 in one 24-hour period then overnight the communists built a 30-mile wall cutting off irrevocably Eastern Berlin from the rest of the city again the free world reacted slowly and the Battle of the wall was lost by default two steps forward Khrushchev talked of peace while at the same time threatening total annihilation of the free world the West's firm stand forced the dictator to withdraw his threat of a separate East German peace treaty one step back Khrushchev needed to reassert his power at home he reopened his attack on Stalin at the 22nd Party Congress new crimes were disclosed and attributed to Stalin and his associates as a crowning gesture of his contempt and his power Khrushchev had Stalin's body removed from its place of honor next to Lenin's Khrushchev had last had all the power that Stalin once possessed but Khrushchev in addition but now brandished weapons of war threatening the world with total destruction [Applause] communism today in less than 50 years communism has arrived at a point where it threatens the entire world these same 50 years have changed the homeland Russia in a number of ways their automobiles new cities new factories a huge military force has been developed undoubtedly certain kinds of progress have been made under communism but West Germany Italy and Japan have far surpassed Russia's standard of living without resorting to totalitarianism to receive an education in Russia a student puts himself completely at the mercy of the state which selects the type of training he received and where he will eventually live work and die to achieve a degree of material change the Russian people have been forced to sacrifice the last vestige of individualism each and every mind in the communist world must express only thoughts the state approves to build rockets the people must give up bread and shoes the top Communists have villas the workers crammed together with two or three families in a small room today Russia has no more housing per person that had had under the Tsar what then prevents this unnatural structure from falling to pieces force force displayed on appropriate occasions in Red Square forced to drive fear deeper into every man's soul propaganda a dream wherein all the people own the means of production this myth still hypnotizes millions in and outside of Russia the fact that equality is further off under communism that it was under the Tsar's should change their dreams into a nightmare but apparently there remains a misty hope in the Russian people's hearts that things will be better someday in the future the last strong chain that holds the vast structure together is Pavlovian conditioning or habit for half a century the Russian people have been retold the same political truisms many react without thinking the state controls jobs food prices and thought the state of course is completely good it can do no wrong it has rockets and armies and men in space food clothing shelter these will come tomorrow or the day after those who ask questions about embarrassing shortcomings of the system are swiftly liquidated Khrushchev has now destroyed Stalin's image we must forget evil Stalin and follow the true words of Lenin exactly what are the words of peaceful coexistence that Lenin offered to the world the existence of the Soviet republic side by side with the imperialistic States for a long time is unthinkable one or the other must triumph in the end and before that end comes to pass a series of frightful collisions between the Soviet republic and the bourgeois states will be inevitable this is what Lenin meant by peaceful coexistence this is what Khrushchev means by peaceful coexistence where will the Communists take their next two steps forward where will they build their next wall in Africa Paris Washington will its shadow one day darken the world the wall is not fragile it is a deep-rooted structure sustained completely by communistic force and the West's defaults and disunity no tanks or bombs can fill it but the one thing it can never encircle is knowledge this is not the end to communism story that end will be written solely by free people's actions not their wishes and the entire world will be changed for good or bad by their decision or centuries to come communist force must be met by the free world with greater force communist conviction must be met by the free world with greater conviction and the West's faith in justice for all must be more enduring than the communists faith in arms terror and complete this wall will become longer unless you the free people of the world exert the same dedication preserving freedom that the Communists are phonetically exerting to communist the world the challenge is great you
