  1. So what do they do, when they are sleeping in the car at night, and one of them has to fart?  And they know it's going to be a big bad one?  Things to think about…..  🙂

  3. Clearly not a professor of finance or basic math. Obviously a career student that's "over-educated" in nonsense. There are several steps she could take to improve her life from moving to a cheaper area (obvious) to as simple as getting a van and converting it to an RV. At least she's repaying her loans though.

  6. $2,500 gross or net? There's no way she can be making $2,500 gross pay if she's working full time. I'm just going to assume the $2,500 is net pay after all taxes and expenses.

  9. It's hard to have much sympathy for her when she chose to pursue a Master's degree and get into all the student loan debts. I also question her intelligence for choosing to stay in liberal-run states where cost of living is ridiculously high. No amount of education, be it associates, bachelors, masters, doctors, etc. can instill common sense and fix stupid.

  12. re the video title: Forced? No, not forced. This is a predictable result of bad decisions, poor planning, poor life management overall. Supporting 2 dogs and a husband? Where are they? Here is a supposition. They are likely not in a car somewhere, but in a home she still has, which she left to go teach ESL in California. An educated person who doesn't do even minimal research on the cost of housing before chasing after a job in another locale has made an error for which that person is responsible. Sure, there are lots of real external problems with the situation where she has put herself, but as most adults know (or should know), poor planning leads to poor outcomes.

  16. If an apartment is $2000, cant she afford just a room?

Cant she qualify for public assistance if her income is close to her rent?

She can put the loans into deferrment?

And she would have to get rid of the car and take public transit or get a cheaper car.

I got into a similar situation and I realized rent comes first no matter what. Not exactly in this order but I gave up my car, scaled back everything, let my debts go into default, put my student loans into deferrment, applied for public assistance for the first time in my life. I channelled all my resources towards housing, got a room in a rooming house, took advantage of rental assistance programs and moved up from there. Now, I will pay the rent first even if I have to go hungry and naked but with so many charities, Goodwill, and things people throw out thats not even necessary. I buy all my clothing at Goodwill now even though I'm back on top. My first apartment after the rooming house was empty. I was sleeping on the floor and I slowly furnished it with throwaway or charity furniture. I had always payed my debts on time, I had a 750 credit rating when I let my bills go into default. Now I just got a large amount of money and im paying them all off in full and almost debt free. Those arent all the details but thats the basic story.

The car is the biggest financial liability. My public transit expenses were $50 to $70 monthly. I got a government phone and used google voice which is free, all to cut expenses.

  17. More than half the class is Mexican or different ancestry and some of them are hiding. I wonder why she can't afford to live there. Breaks my heart I guess the money must be going to the immigrants that are illegal in our school system and the professors are the ones who are pushing for it. Insanity in action

  18. Are these people answering these statements crazy. Tax the citizens so the liberal professors can ruin this nation using illegal immigrants as cannon fodder. They get all the social benefits for free free schooling. What kind of insanity is this. I am very successful and I started sleeping in the missions when I was a young man 60 years ago. Now I have a 4000 square foot brick home I worked my ass off. Try to find any of these kids you can work hahaha

  23. There is something seriously wrong with the world that allows this to happen. Where is the incentive for those students if their professor can not even afford to live in proper accommodation?

  24. The only thing i get out of this story is what the hell is wrong with her husband!? Listen, there's PLENTY of people who work in the Silicone Valley, but can't afford to live here. Two of my friends make $800 a week, so they live in Los Banos. I'm sorry, while I do feel Silicone Valley needs to fix its "cost of living" issue, I find it hard to feel sorry for her. Make some adjustments lady……i.e…..make your husband help out, move out of county, take two jobs, etc….

  26. That was a big mistake to spend $140,000 on a master's degree in English. It's an even bigger to mistake to try to live in San Jose on 30k per year. There are about 40 other states where a thrifty person can live decently on 30k.

  38. An average student pays 40k/year. That'd be no brainer if the schools dedicate two students' tuitions to professors that are successful and get full classes. That'd also bring competition and get rid of mediocre professors who teach just because it's a safe job to keep with their tenure.

  39. Cali is now an overpriced ghetto, where there is no affordable housing, for the average taxpayer. It has the largest homeless population in the US. If Cali, doesn't straighten out its act, people will flee Cali, for more affordable living. The liberal politians, have done a lousy job running the state.

  40. THANK GOD I got out of Calif. in 2001 and never looked back. I now live in a paid of house, paid of cars and live very comfortably on my social security payments. There are 48 other states, I'm not including New York for the same reasons, that are very livable and comfortable states to live in. WHY suffer when we have easy choices in so many other states and cities. That is insane!

Otherwise, she would have moved to an affordable place where she could easily get a job due to her education & skills and thereby afford a home instead of sleeping in a car with her husband & 2 dogs.

  46. This is misleading news. Adjunct professors are like part-time teachers and really not part of the university teaching staff hired via research accomplishments. Adjunct professors all over the country are paid much less than full-time starting professional hires like assistant professors. Adjunct professors are equivalent to part-time jobs without benefits. So she has to do multiple jobs to afford rent in the Bay Area. Sad but true.
