Mormons, Politics, and Mitt Romney | Henry Rollins’ Capitalism: Salt Lake City, Utah| TakePart TV

It is September sixteenth. We are in beautiful Salt Lake City, Utah. Behind me, the church, and in front of you, me. We’re going to be interviewing a man named Scott Hall. Scott Hall is running for the senate seat currently held by Orrin Hatch. My name is Henry Rollins, and I’m embarking on a tour through every state capital in America. all the way up to November’s Presidential elections. I want to learn a few things, and knowledge without mileage equals bullshit. So, come follow me into what Mark Twain called ‘The Territory.’ This is capitalism 2012. Mitt Romney, Scott Howell, Harry Reid. We all have these fundamental beliefs of our faith, and it’s too bad that people would use the faith as a reason not to vote for President Romney. But, as a Mormon Democrat, there’s a lot
of things that I’m trying to dispel. In fact, I got invited back to the DNC to speak about Mormonism in America today. If someone is a religious affiliation, that’s one of the great things about America, that we have religious diversity, freedom from and freedom of religion. And so, I’ve noticed, and I watch the Presidential race very very closely, it’s not been coming up very much in the bigger picture of Mr. Romney, and I’m very glad about that. It says a
lot about where America has come from because I don’t think it should be a restriction to voting for anybody. I really don’t think so, and so, I’m glad about that. I’m glad that you’re running openly, as a Mormon. That, I think will help to dispel things further.
America has a long way to go. You know, we’ve come a long way, and there’s still quite a journey ahead. Should we get a Romney administration, what do you think that will mean to the state of Utah and to Mormon people? It is a Mormon moment right now. It’s exciting because, you know, we’ve lifted our faith out of obscurity. Me running for the United States Senate. Mitt Romney running. And we all have the same beliefs. You can’t help but feel like somebody in the family might have a shot to be the leader of the free world all over. Now, that doesn’t mean we all agree with Mitt Romney’s policies, but if he does get elected, there genuinely is a scripture that I wanted to share out of our doctrine covenant with the whole world. This is a revelation, given to Joseph Smith, and I think this should put at ease and calm
of every person out there that would be afraid that mormonism would be the next policy of the country. And Joseph Smith said, ‘We do not believe it is just to mingle religious influence with civil government, whereby one religious society is fostered and another prescribed in its spiritual privileges and the individual rights of its members as citizens denied. That’s very powerful words coming from the Lord, and so, I want my non-LDS friends to really be able to understand that a true believer of our faith would have just as much respect for a non-believer, for a Jewish, for a Muslim,
for a Protestant, for whoever it might be because, when we lead the United States of America
or I lead in the United States Senate, I don’t care about their faith. What I care about is people. Mr. Howell had some very interesting points of view. He also faces some very unique challenges, in that he’s going up against Orrin Hatch. Orrin Hatch is an extremely long time politician. We’re talking decades. He’s also very well funded, and, so, Mr.
Howell is going to be vastly outspent. There’s no way around it. So, he’s got a hell of a challenge facing
him all the way up until November. I’m going to be on stage here, very very soon This is a city, Salt Lake, that I’ve played many many times. I’ve had a really good time here in my life. The first time I did a show here in
Salt Lake City was the summer of 1981, so I have quite a history with this place. I’m 51. I’ve been doing shows in your city since 1981. So far, I’ve not had a bad time.
Some of the venues have been trying. I’m going to get out of the venue, meet everyone by the bus. We’re going to get on the bus and roll all night to Boise, Idaho, the capital city in the great state of Idaho. It’s a gorgeous piece of real estate, and I’m looking forward to it. So, until then, stay tuned.

  1. You're right, most of them are evil because they take ALL the power away from an individual and place it outside of oneself as something to beg for from some magic man in the sky. It's insidious and sick.

  2. Actually mormans were indeed polygamists for the majority of their creation. That is where the term "sister wives" comes from. Only when mormanism became mainstream and its polygamist roots were looked down upon did they change. The same with their views on black people and indians. what info are you relying on I thought that was common knowledge?

  3. @gdogg2000 before you ever talk about what you think about Mormons, get your facts right by asking a real Mormon and not a website, OR become a Mormon and learn there ways. And lastly, to show that your comment was bull sh!t, you didn't spell Mormon right.

  4. You right wing loonies are so isolated with your opinions that you think anyone who doesn't want a fascist government full of fucked up old white men who are fixated on women's reproductive organs and making money with weapons is a left wing liberal. I don't believe ANY politicians, because that's the nature or the beast is to lie to get the unwashed masses to march in line. Contrary to what your Rush Limbaugh damaged brain may think, some people actually have their OWN opinions. Unlike you.

  5. Fact. Joseph Smith was a nutcase who managed to pull a religion out of his ass with his unbelievable nonsense. After doing DNA testing on every major American Indian tribe, not one showed any Jewish DNA. But that wasn't even necessary since Smith's lunatic claims didn't have to be disproved. Anyone with a 2nd grade education would have called "bullshit" to his "visions". And who cares how you spell a word that means brainwashed idiot? Not me.

and i have to get a search on, for some credible secular charities:
because i'm not giving to anything that's affiliated (in any way) with religion.
i know they're out there somewhere; my job: find them. regards.

  7. Unfortunately, as much as religious people deny it, laws locally and federally have been made to favor the opinions of belief(religion) of some over others. Due to majority (which we aren't a majority rule country- founding fathers never supported the notion of minority oppression) or elected officials swaying the direction of policies.

Warrant-less killing, torturing, stealing, cheating and lying are kind of universal rules among humanity deemed as unacceptable- not talking about such issues.

  9. Calm down. You're just making yourself look more foolish. He wasn't falling back on his ludicrous faith. He was making a point that even Mormonism accepts the notion of separation of church and state. Furthermore, without God (or religious devotion to an objective philosophy), one has no legitimate grounds to say "killing is bad," even under the conditions you presented, because that leaves no logical proof that liberty is "good." Or that "good" is good. Religion is a circular argument?

  17. @buttmanroad LoL. Dude, other than beer in grocery stores all our alcohol is the same. We have bars, we have strip clubs. Utah is just like every state. It's not all Mormon like people think. In fact, the majority of people in this state are not Mormon. It's actually quite fun here. The worst thing though….. it sometimes snows in July!

  18. it's funny how the 'Mormon homeland" is Headquartered in Utah… From what I've gathered, Joseph Smith found those scriptures, was found in Upstae New York, like another town away from Rochester, NY. makes you think don't it?

  19. Why are liberals so intolerant? I wouldn't consider myself 100% right wing, but it seems like people are being pushed around by angry, liberal hypocrites. Liberals claim they want to coexist, but they use bullying tactics to force people to accept their views. I hear all day how the big bad conservatives hate everyone and destroy human rights blah blah. From what I can see, liberals are bullies. Everyone believes in something. Its not your job to tell them they are wrong, nor do you even know.

  20. Yeah, funny how literal 'Extermination Orders' will make you think twice about where you call home. Plus, according to Alan Brinkely, most of the western united states wouldn't have been as successfully settled if it hadn't been for Brigham Young and the Mormon Exodus.

  21. 2:27 I would never think that the book of mormon say that. Where I live a lot of mormons are always knocking on my door and trying to debate me about religion. Mitt Romney is a hypocritical and want to force his belief on everyone. Look at his view on gay marriage and marijuana.

  24. Good response. However that is vast, sweeping generalization to put crimes done by smaller groups on religion as a whole. All Muslims don't fly planes into buildings, all Christians don't send their children on crusades, all Hindus don't force young women into prostitution. The concept of religion is healthy, it's how someone uses it that makes it dangerous. That could be said about political beliefs, national beliefs etc. You might as well say any belief is damaging to the world and the people.

  25. Everyone needs to read the book “CAN MITT ROMNEY SERVE TWO MASTERS?” THE MORMON CHURCH v THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENCY”. It’s shocking and reads like an exciting novel, but it reveals the horrific underbelly of this church, plus shocking facts on Romney, who almost became our president. I have read it twice and the info in it will astound you. Well researched and documented. And make no mistake…The Mormon Quest For the Presidency will rear its ugly head again.

There actual real and efficient ways to protect yourself, but the problem with being limited to only a few books in any religion kinda puts the brakes on learning or utilizing any of them.

    Reply

  47. Well the reason they even had polygamy was because all the men in the church were being killed by outsiders leaving a wife with a bunch of kids to take care of herself. So, The remaining men married multiple wives because its against the churchs initial beliefs to share a house with a woman you are not wedded to. And I don't think there were any crazy orgys or anything like that. They took in the women and children and took care of them as family.
