I got myself a punched card with that hot game everyone is talking about, Night in the Woods to check what the fuss is all about. The game tells a story about little pussycat Mae who came back home from college to see how drastically everything has changed. I, personally, can relate to that it’s just like this one time I came back from GULAG So she reconnects with her friends. Here they are. Gregg the fox, young anarchist who likes going on small crime sprees and works in a grocery store. One time we hung out he chanted “Smash Capitalism!” so that makes Night in the Woods strong game of the year contender for me Angus the bear, smart and silent with difficult childhood And Bea the crocodile, goth-girl who has to work seven days a week They all seem like cliches but the more you talk to them the more you realize that they are really complex and layered characters Oh, they also have a band and sometimes you can participate in band practice with QTE parts The music they play and music in Night in the Woods in general is superb Not sure if I’m gonna get the soundtrack for my vinyl player but this music has a special place in my heart Real story starts a good five or more days after Mae comes back You just need to power through the beginning The story takes a bit too much time to get started but I can see why they did that in the end I’m not going to spoil any of the story, you need to see everything yourselves It is a story about depression, mental illnesses but also about becoming an adult how it is far from what you have imagined your grown up life would be Too far, I would say Cool thing: Mae has a laptop, which has a game installed on it, “Demontower” Real, playable roguelike game It’s like matryoshka, a game inside a game This one’s cool but not as enjoyable, though It becomes harsher with every level but it’s not really fair Hitdetection kinda sucks And stunlocks… Oh, God, the stunlocks… If you’re hit, you need to dodge away from the enemy or you’ll continue to get more damage Sometimes, with just one hit you’ll lose all of your lives roleplaying a ping-pong ball Good thing, it’s not obligatory to finish it Back to the main game A decent amount of time you will spend going around town being one-on-one with thick atmosphere and stunning art style and silky-smooth animations with stunning amount of interactive physically correct objects All of this makes this incredible and cozy town as real as the one you see outside your window There’s one downside, though Loading screens there are… LOADS of them Loads of them… So I can’t express enough how beautiful this game is screenshots and youtube videos give a general idea but they are just not as beautiful as live gameplay Oh, yeah, there are couple of things that make this town awesome for me There is a pierogi stand in the underground walkway and some of the houses are marked with red stars With so much talk about communism in this game I felt pretty much at home One weird thing, though This world is populated with anthropomorphic animals but there are regular animals running around as well It’s, like, animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others The only real problem I had is the dialogue it’s too lifelike and it very accurately represents awkward dialogues It’s good and all, but from gameplay perspective sometimes you need to click through walls of meaningless text because characters don’t know what to say and try to fill the silence Now, as I write this review I had a thought that this was made on purpose so you, too, could feel awkward together with characters But other great things overweigh this easily So I ask you, go and play the game, you’re not gonna regret it Not many games left me with overwhelming emotions at the end except that game of pong with Pietrovich where I won a crate of vodka but you get the point I mean, I’ve never felt closer to pussy than Night in the Woods made me feel Wait, that came out all wrong
